A Razor clam is exciting seafood that popular for its meaty nutrition and taste. This shellfish is usually located in the sand of coastal beaches. Also known with the name of razorfish and razor shell, it is one of few underrated options that can be used for crab bait, especially if you are doing this activity in winter cod. The reason behind they are called razor clam is due to their shape and size that is same as cut-throat shave razor.

How can razor clams be caught?

Visit a coastal beach and look out for the place where the clams have stuck their neck out and looking to go back to the sea. Once you find it, you have to follow one of the two methods mentioned below:

  • Clam Gun

In this method, you have to shop a clam gun that is available in almost all fishing supply stores. For those who don’t know, it is crafted in a T-shape that ensure there is no need to cover it with fingers while digging process.

Once you find a cluster of razor clams, there is a need to place the clam gun on it in the sand at least 3 feet. Empty the gun by taking out clams and putting them in the box. You may face a little bit of difficulty while using this gun on rocky beaches.

  • Salt method

If you want to go for an easier path, then you should go for the salt method. The razor clams are very sensitive to salts, and that’s why they emerge from sand once you pour salt into the hole on the beach.

You will succeed in catching them quite easily, even with bare hands when they came out. Don’t forget to put them securely in an ice chest.

Both of these methods are easy to follow, and you can choose anyone according to the convenience.

How can razor clams be prepared?

Razor clams aren’t a popular option as crab bait due to unknown reasons. However, many of the experts believe that it can be a great option for a catching variety of sea creatures ranging from bass, cod, and even a crab. Another reason to use them as bait is easy to use process. Let’s have a look at the step by step process for using this shellfish as bait below:

  • Cleaning

The foremost thing that you need to do is cleaning the razor clam that is pretty easier. Don’t use them straight up as bait because it can affect the health of a crab due to impurities attached with them.

  • Opening shell

The shell of the razorfish needs to be opened along the edges using a knife. You need to make sure that all the material is removed from the body of clam.

  • Eliminating flesh

If you are a fishing lover, then you may be aware that the majority of shellfish don’t have too much flesh. However, the case is different with razor shell that has of flesh, including mussels. Due to this, you will find lots of watery mess in their body.

  • Slicing down

If you have a large razorfish, then you can easily cut it down into a 3 to 4 tipping baits. In case the size is small; then you have to satisfy only with 1 or 2 baits.

  • Freezing

Use a metal tray to freeze the razor fishes. They can last for a long time without creating any problem.

How to use them as crab bait?

Now, it is the time for real action, i.e. catching crab in the sea or river adequately. You can follow some tips mentioned below for fishing with razor comfortably:

  • The pieces that you have sliced down needs to be tied on the hook using elastic cotton.
  • We suggest you using an Aberdeen or Viking hooks with a Pennell rig as they have clammed up section.
